Nadine McSpadden is a Helping Teacher for Aboriginal Learning (Surrey District) who reviews books with Indigenous content. She has also worked with FNESC in their review process for authentic Indigenous resources. As a Sepwecemc writer, Nadine has a unique perspective of the importance of using resources that reflect Indigenous peoples in past and current contexts in positive and respectful ways. In this workshop, teacher-librarians will look at some of the criteria Surrey School District uses when reviewing Indigenous resources. We’ll explore the importance of understanding the difference between Indigenous stories and Native legends. Finally, we’ll discuss what happens when we use authentic Indigenous Resources and look at some of the newest, most engaging resources currently available.
