Equity is not something we “do” every once in a while, but rather the lens through which we intentionally plan and carry out our vision of the LLC. Our patrons deserve and need to see themselves in literature, and it’s clear that having a wide variety of representations, experiences and perspectives can foster empathy for all.
So how diverse is your collection?
A diversity audit is a thorough review, or inventory, of items in the LLC. The goal is to determine which items are diverse, and in what ways, and what gaps exist in order to develop a more diverse collection. A diversity audit is equity in action.

Rebeca Rubio is the Curriculum Coordinator for Libraries and Information Services in SD38 (Richmond). She supports Teacher Librarians in developing programs, redesigning flexible spaces and developing culturally responsive Library Learning Commons. She also manages and maintains the District Resource Centre, acquiring and circulating valuable resources for all SD38 educators. She is actively engaged in exploring student engagement, multiple literacies and diversity and equity in LLCs.
